Dorf Fortress – Year 4 – Keldab

So begins the Journal entries of Keldab the Doomed.

Table of Contents

1st of Granite

I am left with a fortress in peril. I can only imagine I have been selected as the scape-dorf. Let us see what we can make of it.

10th of Granite

I have begun setting up the Metal Crafting industry, despite there being a severe lack of quality ores here. I found a section of warm stone just out in the caverns and have ordered a shaft be dug over it so that we might set up a magma smelter, with luck we’ll be able to use it.

27th of Granite

An observation: All of the Fortresses children hang out in the mayor’s bedroom. I do not know why, but there are MANY children playing in his rooms.

Also, I have set a captain of the guard so that we may punish criminals in a less than lethal fashion. If I have any metal cages in the dungeon by the end of the year I will be surprised.

13th of Slate

My poor dorfs were too terrified to leave their burrows to do work. I have removed the alert and they have come out to play.

22nd Slate

Migrants have arrived. On the Surface. With the Titan. We are working on an Airlock system to allow them entry while the Titan chases a herd of camels, but there is little hope.

25th Slate

Kol Nomalkes has arisen to haunt the Fortress, likely the first of many. We have begun carving him a slab so that he can return to his rest.

14th Felsite

By Armok, we saved the migrants. Oddom refused to come back inside, but he’s lived a long life and will be missed. Perhaps he’ll come in in the future.

Nevermind, he was brutally murdered.

15th Felsite

We need ores. We will prepare to breach the caverns again to search for them. They can’t be worse than the blasted surface

27 Felsite

We’ve found a vein of Hematite in the cavern, praise be to the Gods.

4th of Hematite

We’ve breached the caverns. Here’s hoping our luck doesn’t get worse.

12th of Hematite

The Human Caravan has arrived. Aaaaand they’re gone. Poor bastards.

22nd Hematite

I’ve tied a cock up in the airlock to attempt to trap the Titan. With some luck the Titan will jump all over my cock.

16th of Malachite

We did it. It took 2 Roosters, a Guinea hen and 3 children, but the Mountain Titan Umstos Stuzangbog Rabab One has been trapped. The beast was wily enough to eat the birds and flee before the bridge could be raised, and the children kept running outside instead of back into the burrow… their loss is our gain I suppose.

I will begin construction of a Grand Orphanage Monument in recognition of the efforts of the Children. Also I will wall off the beast so that none may accidentally release it, and place a section of roadway above it so that no hated trees may open a hole in the roof…

21st of Malachite

I have re-opened the Front gate, and begun mining a massive tomb complex to house the remains of all the fallen. Before they begin to rot…

25th Galena

I have finished my own Tomb, I hope I shall not need it, but it is ready. As is the Grand Orphan Monument/Orphanage

10th of Limestone

Our bottomless drink stockpile does not seem so bottomless at this point. We are almost out of drinks, so I’ve set our finest remaining brewers (random dwarfs as no brewer survived) on the task of replenishing our stocks.

14th Limestone

Our Mayor was screaming about not having a dining room, so we dug him a pit by the tombs. He should feel honored.

5th of Sandstone

I fear we have begun to run low on lumber, so I have commanded a great cutting of the forest.

7th of Sandstone

the Merchants have come and are now leaving… I was distracted by the Necropolis. For some reason they have only brought leather? I have asked for Seeds and Metal Bars of Iron, Steel and Copper for the next trip.

14th of Sandstone

Texicus First of his name and Father of the Fortress was nearly crushed to death by a tree on the surface. His hatred of trees truly knows no bounds. When he awoke, he immediately began hewing another tree. A True Dorf. A Statue will be erected to commemorate the occasion.

6th of Timber

Texicus is recovering from a beating inflicted on him by the captain of the Guard. The Mayor accused him of violating a production order for Greaves. We barely have enough metal for Anvils let alone his frivolous pursuits, but Texicus has paid the price. In other news, the bedrooms are being finished and we’re about halfway through the Necropolis project. So we got that going for us, which is great.

14th of Timber

We discovered a downward passage! Exciting!

14th of Timber

it was full of cavern dwellers. Less good. Although they seem to be far away from the cavern gate and do not seem inclined to approach it… we shall see.

20th of Timber

A Marksdorf by the name of Mestthos Kokebfath attempted to steal Grizzleshivel the Contested Thunder, and is currently being beaten to death by my Marksdorfs. Why they did not shoot him, I couldn’t say. This is probably the 4th or 5th attempt of someone to steal it, but usually they yell some supervillain line like “You’ll never catch me!” or “This isn’t the last you’ve heard of me!” from the edge of the map and run away. Mr Kokebfath is either braver than most, or stupider.

18th of Moonstone

Project Smooth Earth Theory has completed. The Fortress is flat. Finally, smoother than an elf’s ass. Livable at last.

3rd of Obsidian

Dammit Tex.

1st of Granite

The time has come to pass along the mantle of leadership to another. I have labored long and hard to overcome the challenges and obstacles laid at my feet and have bested them all. We have trapped the Mountain Titan in a tomb of stone, and hewn a vast Necropolis for the valiant Dwarves who paid the price to detain it. We have turned away dozens of damnable bards and poets who seek to leech off our prosperity, and have begun to improve the fortunes of the brave souls who remain here. I look forward to the bright future of Mezdurad. May Threebeard last until the dying of the age.
